Taradale Talk

Principal Update

October 10, 2023

Dear Taradale Families:

We hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend. It is nice that the weather has been so nice so that students are able to be outdoors. The students have settled nicely into the routines after the first month. Please read all of the important updates below:

Attendance

Under the Education Act, it is an Alberta Education expectation that all students under the age of 16 attend school every day. This includes our half-day Fridays. Even though students are only in school for the morning; there is still important learning that is taking place. Please make it a priority to ensure your child attends all days of school.

If your child is going to be away, please call out Attendance line 403-777-6270 option 1.

Communication

When you have specific questions about your child, your first point of contact is always the classroom teacher. Please email the teacher to book a time to talk. Teachers are not available to talk during school hours as they are teaching.

Late Arrival

Our doors open at 8:09 for students to come into the school to begin their day. We will have a warning bell at 8:09. 8:15 is the beginning of instructional time. Your child should be in their classroom ready to begin learning by this time. If your child arrives after 8:15, they must go around to the office to access the building, and check in at the office. Please prioritize being on time for school.

Early Pick up

If you are coming to the school to pick up your child early, you must come to the office. Students will not be released from their dismissal doors. Please ring the bell and let the office know you are here to pick up your child.

Dismissal

Students are dismissed at 3:00 pm. The students must stay in their meeting spot with their supervisor until they see a parent. It is very important that families are on time to pick up students.

Safety

Student and staff safety is one of the most important things we do at school. We recognize that the traffic is very busy at dismissal time. If you are driving to pick up your child, please ensure you are parking so that you are not obstructing the flow of traffic, and the crosswalk. We will not let the children to come to your car in the middle of the road. You must park and come and meet your child. The crosswalk supervisors are doing their best to ensure everyone is safe. Please be patient, and we will ensure we are being efficient with crossing the street. We all have a role to play in student and staff safety.

Dress for the Weather

This is a reminder that we will be going outside during recess and at lunch for some fresh air to play and socialize with friends. We monitor the weather and continue to go outside until it is -20. Please ensure you are dressing your child in warm outside clothes as the weather can change quickly during the day.

Noon Supervision

If your child will be staying for lunch, please register through MyCBE/PowerSchool. Registration for lunchroom is on-going throughout the year and fees will be available for payment after registration around the end of September. Please ensure you are sending utensils in your child's lunch. We do not have extras at the school.

Brown Bagging

Taradale has a partnership with Brown Bagging 4 Kids who provide our school with lunches for students in need. If you are struggling to provide your child a lunch each day, please reach out and we will ensure your child receives a lunch. Please call the office to sign up for this program.

School Messenger

Please ensure you have subscribed to School Messenger so that you receive emails from Taradale School and CBE System Updates. School Messenger and the Taradale School webpage are the primary means of parent communication.

Playground

As I am sure you have noticed; the City of Calgary is hard at work building a playground for the residents of Taradale. We will share more information about the use of the playground for Taradale students during school hours as we are informed by our City of Calgary partners.

Artist In Residence

From October 16 - October 30, Elder Shirley Hill (Anatsipi'kssaakii) will begin her Artist in Residency at Taradale School to share about Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being with our staff and our students. She has many gifts she is excited to bring into our school house including story telling, fancy-shawl dancing, and hoop-dancing. We will even get to meet her special friend, Lemon the Bear. By connecting with Elder Shirley, Taradale School is committed to building relationships with our community Elders and continue our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation this school year.

MyCBE/PowerSchool

Please ensure you have created your MyCBE/PowerSchool account. This will enable you to book conferences, pay fees and see Report Cards. If you need assistance, please let us know.

Learning Commons Corner

Welcome parents to the Taradale School Learning Commons! My name is Mrs. Samrai and I am the Library Assistant here at Taradale School. I have enjoyed seeing all of your children as they have come in as a class these last few weeks to learn about library routines and expectations. Starting on October 23rd students from grades 1-4 will be switching to our Open Learning Commons model. This means that instead of coming to get a new book as a whole class, students will have the opportunity to come individually with a Learning Commons pass to exchange their book. All of our kindergarten students will continue to come in as a class to take a book back to the classroom library and will not be bringing books home. If your child is in grades 1-4 we ask that you help remind them about some of our expectations with our books:

  1. Every student has been given a large Ziploc bag to put their book in as they carry it home and back to school to avoid any liquid spills. Please take care of these bags as they are meant to be used all year.
  2. Please help your child find a safe place at home to store their book so that they don't misplace it.
  3. Please do not let your child write in the books or rip any pages.
  4. The students are responsible for their books and will be charged for any damage done to them or if any books are lost.
  5. Students will only be allowed to take a new book if they return their old book.

Our books are for the whole school to share to please help us keep them in good condition for everyone to enjoy.
